So, last night I gave Meredith a ring and asked if she needed a restaurant post for tomorrow. Today marks my baby’s 6-week birthday. Maternity leave is over and I’m ready to jump back in. To everyone who stepped up over the past few weeks to share your restaurant suggestions with us thank you, thank you, thank you! I know I for one have enjoyed reading all of your dining experiences and have gained a few more places to my "to eat at" list. Please, continue to send reviews! toeatinokinawa@yahoo.com(Particularly y’all around Awase, Kinser, Courtney/McT! We’re a little short in these areas of the island and would love to hear about your faves. )
So, in the last review I posted before giving birth, I shared an unfortunate picture of myself looking pregnant and uncomfortable. I was one day past my due date I think. Well, the baby came about a week later and as it turns out I had good reason to be uncomfortable. I’d been toting around a 10 pounder. A 10 pound 2 ouncer to be exact. Hmmm… I guess all those good eats paid off. Here’s a pic of my little munchkin and new dining companion. Meet Gabe:
Already he’s got some good fashion sense, no?
He’s also got a pretty good appetite. So, Gabe should look forward to eating with me at Khrua Thai, the little restaurant near Camp Courtney that Rachel has reviewed for this week. I caught a glimpse of it last night on the way to Daikono Hana and it looked like the kind of homey, charming, hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant that I love. And at about 8pm at night, it was still busy. A good sign in my book. Here’s what Rachel had to say about it:
Located by Camp Courtney, my husband and I went to Khrua Thai last week. A friend e-mailed me the menu, so I could choose what I wanted ahead of time. I take forever to pick, since everything always looks so good. A couple of Marine Wives are the owners, so they speak perfect English and accept dollars or yen. Everyone was so friendly and kind. They have 5-6 tables and about six seats at the counter. They are open for lunch and dinner, though I presume they are pretty busy for lunch, since all the Marines can just walk across the street from the base. We went for dinner and did not need reservations, and got right in. We got the fresh spring roll, which my husband pointed out was "salad in a roll." It was cool, and new to us. However, we have only been here for 4 months so many things are still new to us. Then I had the Tom Kah Gai (Chicken)*, which comes with rice. I do not like spicy and they made it mild for me. It was so good and different. My husband got the Beef Basil Stir Fry at level 2, which also comes with rice. He likes spicy but did not want to jump right in. It was a good thing, the number 2 level was just right for him. I was even able to sample a few bites of his, but my lips tingled afterwards for a few minutes. Both dishes certainly keep the sinuses clear. The people who own it have done a wonderful job with the place. They just opened sometime in Jan. and it is so adorable and comfortable inside. If you enjoy Thai or even are willing to give it a try this is worth it, especially if you are in the area.
Directions:
It is extremely easy to get to. Khrua Thai is located directly across the street from the Main entrance of Camp Courtney, in the strip mall that faces the gate. There is a childcare center at one end and this restaurant at the other. The children on the menu are also shown on the wall above the restaurant. You cannot miss it. There is parking right in front, or just park down the street.

He’s so delicious!!! Never mind the other food, I could eat him up. HOpe you got the presents…
Missing you
How long did it take you to get your merchandise. I got an email that mine shipped April 10th, but it’s been 3 weeks and I still haven’t recieved it.
Paula, I wanna say that it took about three weeks to get our Hai gear. It should be getting to you soon. Let us know if it takes much longer!
Went here for dinner tonight. Food was excellent and service fast. Two thumbs up on the Pad Thai!!
I’ve been meaning to add that we’ve eaten there twice. The beef basil stir fry is yummy!
How do you get to Camp Courtney from Kadena? If anyone could give me directions to Courtney, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!
That’s what I need… directions to Courtney from Kadenda. Anyone?? Thanks!
To get to Courtney from Kadena, the easiest way is to go straight out gate 3 until you come to 329. Take a left onto 329. When 329 splits, stay to the right. Take a right on 75. As you wind your way down 75, little Courtney (small commissary, gas station, post office) will come up on your right, and big Courtney will follow on the left. Khrua Thai is on the right, across from Big Courtney.
Thanks for directions!
this place is overrated!!! the food is not that great and it’s way overpriced! i honestly do not know why people enjoy this place. customer service sucks and the portions are a rip off!
I don’t know what the heck your talking about SC obviously you don’t know the meaning of over priced. Because they are not over priced and the food is excellent! Another thing the service is excellent as well. They are extremely nice there! Best Thai food I have ever had. You obviously know nothing about Thai food. So you must have been the individual that came in and tried to get their food for free! But I know the portion size is by far not a rip off if anything us as customers are ripping them off because the portion of food and the quality and taste of the food is excellent! So before you give bad comments about a place you should really research things first. I eat there all the time and it is awesome.
My family and I have enjoyed going there at least once a month for the last year we have been here. Even my pickiest eater enjoys eating the garlic chicken. The customer service is very pleasant. Especially, when we first got on island being able to go out in town and not have to stress over communication or even being able to pay cash for delicious Thai food. Yummy!
I’m on my way there this morning for lunch. I’ve eaten there before and I loooove the curry. I think I had the yellow curry with rice. I had a chance to eat it stateside before we came here in 2009, so I knew it was gonna be delicious! I might try the chicken that was mentioned in the post and see what that’s like. Happy eating all!
I loved to go to this restaurant but since the actual owners pcs’d the service has changed drastically. The couple of times i have recently visited it has been the same small things. They now have children waiting on you who have absolutely no respect. One came and threw straws on the table, took our order with her mouth full so she could not answer when we had questions of what was available that day and rudely placed our plates on the table. The food is great but not worth paying that much for good food with bad service! Sad but we will no longer visit this restaurant due to the service.
Dear ..Everyone..
I apologize for your bad experiences at the restaurant ..I did fire her since..I read the comment, and I notice that before I see the comment but I kept giving her chances.. Anyway thank you so much for a feedback ..It’s really helpful and important for us..
Thank you and Have a Happy New Year!
This restaurant has delicious Thai food, and the prices are great. Most eateries on this island are way overpriced, however, I have found this place to be well priced with perfect portion sizes. As for the wait staff, I find them to be fantastic. My meal is always delivered as ordered, and my server always has a smile on her face. I love Khrua Thai!
We love Khrua Thai too, but I find that their hous of operation are always changing and I can never seem to get there when they are open. Does anyone have an updated schedule of their hours?

Would hate for you guys to make a trip.
I love this little place! Portions are just right and the prices are great. And not to mention the food, the food is amazing! The waiter is always so friendly and always has great recommendations. I would call ahead of time if you have a big party, especially during lunch time.
Is this place still open? I heard rumors of them closing. Every time I’ve come it has been closed.
This place is still open I believe they have been making renovations. I was just there they added some warm touches. The food is always amazing. I hope Negh is not going anywhere I need my thai craving fulfilled.
I tried to go there with my family, but it was closed. We were there at 7:00 on a Friday night… not an unusual time for dinner. We even called to see if there was a message about being closed… nothing. The note on the door said they were closed for lunch but would be open for dinner. We drove an hour specifically to try this restaurant… very disappointing. At the very least, they need to invest in a recording to let customers know if they will be closed for the evening. I love Thai, but I will find other places to go.
All,
Regular here….. You won’t find a better Thai restaurant on the island. Owners have been busy moving their home and just recently a family friend was admitted in the hospital this could be a reason for the abrupt closing. Her Thai Food is awesome I’ll miss it when I rotate. They need to open one at Camp Lejeuene.
I believe they are going to close for their family vacation 1-15 August. Khrua get some rest and enjoy your Vacation. Come back soon and cook me some Basil Chicken w/egg Thai Style. Yummy!
Best Thai Food on Island. When i can’t make it to Thailand, this restuarant definetly cures the crave. Definetly would recommend for anyone who enjoys real Thai Food.
