Climax coffeeThis is one of my favorite places on Okinawa to go for coffee. They are a little bit cheaper than Starbucks, extremely delicious, have a lunch menu, and free wi-fi. Can’t shake a stick at that. Well, you could… but why would you?

I first saw this place just after we moved here, but wasn’t sure what their story was. What went on in there? Was it family-friendly or did you have to be like 18 and up to go in? Or was my mind just stuck in the gutter? Turns out the story is that they just make really good coffee drinks. And whatever they do to the whipped cream on the top, it is absolutely sinful.

My favorite are the mochas, which in my mind, are better than the ones at Starbucks (and bit cheaper, too). I don’t even like chai all that much, but I like it there. The milk shakes look a-ma-zing. That matcha milk is pretty darn delicious, too. One thing to note though, is that they do not do drip coffee — but trust me, it is no great loss.

After 11:30am they offer a lunch menu (and dinner later on). I’ve had the burgers and I liked them better than Gordies, though they were a little heavy on the mayo. The taco rice is pretty tasty, too. I keep promising myself that I am going to order the berry pancakes, but I always seem to wind up with something else.

When you order a lunch you can pay 100Y extra to get the “American set” which gives you a choice of 3 sides (5 to chose from, including drink) to go along with your meal. It is a ton of food! Granted, the portions of the side items are small, but if you can eat all of your main item, plus all of your sides, well, more power to you.

Directions: There are several locations, but the one most convenient to most of us is located across the street from the Hamby San-A (the one by Araha Beach Park). They have a reserved parking lot, but in lieu of trying to describe directions, I drew a map. Most often though, I just park at San-A and walk across the street.

  1. My husband and I are at the American village location this morning, it does not open till 0830 not like 08 that it says in the post. It’s not too much of a difference, but just wanted to let everyone know!

  2. I went by the Araha Beach location yesterday, and it was closed with a sign that said that location closed indefinitely on December 28, 2014 due to a lack of customers caused by bad parking 🙁 They had a sign with the other locations you can visit.

  3. All I can do is echo the sentiment that I wish I knew about this place earlier. 2 years on this island and I just went for the first time. It’s delicious but pricey. There’s also a branch in American village on the first floor at the intersection just past the Ferris wheel. I had the Elvis pancake… Which is pancakes with a peanut butter sauce, grilled bananas and berry syrup. It also came with a side of bacon. I also tried the okinawan cane syrup iced coffee. My husband who’s normally a *huge* appetite got apple cinnamon pancakes and didn’t even finish half. Lol I couldn’t finish my plate either so they are super heavy for sure. 2 pancake platters and 2 drinks cost us 3100 yen. They take card, dollars and yen. Can’t wait to go back for the muffins.

  4. And a piece of heated coal is kept is kept at the top of everything.
The Hookah shisha effects to the human body have been studied upon by health experts and scientists since the use of the products began, it has received a lot
of negative comments and controversies. The tobacco which is used in hookahs, called shisha, is different
from the one used in any other form of smoking.

  5. While the service and coffee is delicious, I was disappointed in their food. My friends and I didn’t like their pasta, or sandwiches, or fried basil chicken dish. It all tasted like cheap microwaved dinners. I will be back for their coffee and muffins though! The coffee is excellent.

  6. Milky choco, hot or cold, is delicious.
Chocolate chip muffin very good also, moist and sweet as how they make it in the states.
Pancakes – not a big fan, it’s heavier than what I’m used to.

I’d try the burgers next time, they look great!

  7. We went tonight for the first time, the service was awesome, the food very yummy and I loved the atmoshpere of the place. We are thinking about taking the kids back to try out their pancakes for brunch one of these days.

  8. LOVE the muffins here. They are a bit expensive at 250 yen a piece, but they are big and always so moist. I recommend the cheese and choc chip. My kids eat them like candy. I stop there a lot just to grab muffins for a special treat. I had a guacamole burger while there for a spouses coffee (great place for small meetings) and thought it was better than Gordies. (but I hated that place. burger was full of fat and they had 5 fries on my plate.)
Also had the mixed berry parfait today when I stopped for muffins and it was delicious. Awesome little place. I have never had a problem parking. Always park in one of the 4 spots directly next to the Chatan one. I believe they are reserved for Climax.

  9. This place is AMAZING. Wish I had found it sooner! Went twice while I was visiting my husband. The vanilla lattes are perfect as well as the pancakes! (and I’m a coffee snob) Anyways the bathroom was a trip-I could not get the toilet to stop spraying! The location I visited used to be a hanger—what a great structure!

  10. I went to Climax Coffee near Araha Beach twice this week. We had a spouses lunch there and then I took my husband and daughter. Not only is the food phenomenal but the service is awesome too. The Terraki Chicken plate is so yummy that I ordered it both times. My husband got the mega burger and I heard him praise the cook all the way home. The waiting staff suggested a choco milk for my daughter which was a sweeter version of chocolate milk. She enjoyed every last drop. The chai tea is mixed to perfection. Did I mention they have an add on to any plate for 100 yen? Thats for 3 items. Try the carrot soup if you have a chance. Its creamy and has cheese in it. I am not a carrot fan but this soup is awesome. Enjoy!

  11. A friend just brought me some muffins from Climax and I was amazed at how delicious they were! Very fresh and moist, and the coffee (cappuccino?) flavored muffin was fabulous. I can’t wait to go there myself, if only for the muffins.

  12. Went yesterday and it was great. We got two sets, plus an extra sandwich for under 2000 yen. Can’t wait to go back to try the drinks and pancakes.

Question though, has anyone been to the Persian restaurant a few places down? Looked like it may have had a hookah bar as well. We were intrigued.

  13. After reading the comments and dying for some good old “American style” breakfast we headed down to climax coffee on a Sunday morning. We both ordered the American breakfast which includes 3 thick pancakes, McDonalds style hashbrown, 1 egg, and 2 strips of bacon. My Husband got a regular mocha and I got some sort of delicious caramel milk choco, both hot. Everything was very good but I thought the selection of breakfast food was small to say the least. I think there’s only 4 different pancake choices and that’s it for the breakfast menu except for a few parfaits. The lunch and dinner menu looked extensive though. The prices aren’t bad which is a plus, I think we paid right around 2200 Yen for everything mentioned above. Overall it satisfied my craving but on a scale of 1 to 10 for selection of the breakfast menu I would give it a 2.

  14. We checked out Climax Coffee this weekend. It looked like a very busy and popular place for Americans. We were especially interested in the burgers, which were claimed to be “better than Gordies”. Sorry, the burgers did not live up to the expectation, they’re not REAL! Almost worse than a fastfood soy burger. The various toppings for the burgers were nice. The drinks were great and my son enjoyed a huge plate of chicken cutlet curry and rice. It wasn’t CoCo’s but it was good and the chicken cutlets were better than CoCos. I still say “Gordies is the bomb!”

  15. After reading this my family decided to go on Saturday morning about 10 am for brunch. Boy, were we glad we did. With 2 young boys who miss Ihop, Denny’s & Waffle house, this was definitely a heaven-sent. We had ordered 2 American breakfast that came with a short stack (or full stack) & 1 egg (cooked 3 different ways) & hash browns & bacon (cooked 2 different ways). You can also order half size & we did that for our youngest. I ordered the Chocó banana short stack & my husband had the green tea short stack. Needless, to say NOTHING was left on our plates. Not just because we were hungry but this was the first time in a long time that we had pancakes remotely close to an Ihop or Denny’s. We also had the drinks. My 10yr. old devoured his choc banana shake & my 7 yr. left nothing of his chocolate shake. My husband had the iced caramel mocha & I had the regular iced mocha but it was a little too strong for my palette. But none the less, the boys want to go back there this weekend for brunch. All the food & drink came out to 4300 yen, so not too bad for a family of 4 with drinks. So we will be back this Saturday morning. Definitely worth trying out.

  16. Not all of the food is good. I went the other day and got a chicken pita (grilled bread) sandwich. It was obviously precooked and frozen chicken pieces that had been microwaved and put on the bread w/ mustard. The pictures show a juicy chicken tender sandwich with sauces and lettuce. Ummm, not what I received. The drinks are always super yummy though!!!

  17. The CLIMAX COFFEE website lists three locations in Okinawa (click on the MAP section from the menu on the webpage).
    1) Chatan Town – Hamby (the one described in the article above).
    2) Naha City – Shintoshin – SAN-A Main Place shopping center; second floor.
    3) Itoman City – SAN-A Shiozaki City shopping center; located about 500 meters south of the Itoman Rotary on Route 331.

The coffee shop that is on the first floor of the AEON Gushikawa shopping center (JUSCO) along Route 85 is DOUTOR COFFEE, which has three other locations, all in Naha City.

  18. I love this place! They are a great option for breakfast, as well. I usually get a mountain of pancakes topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and bananas. I get the half size and usually have trouble finishing it. My husband loves their panini’s. The selection of muffins by the register look delicious as well! Reasonably priced, like you said, and the free wifi is a big plus! Great place to go to, they have my vote!
