2014 Update – The owner left this information in the comments: “Yes, we are open again this year from 4:00 to 10:30 PM, through 29 December, our last day. We spoke with the MAN-IN-THE-RED-SUIT and he has agreed to stop by 6-times this year; December 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, and 22, which are by RESERVATIONS ONLY. As of this update, the 19th and 22nd of December are sold out. I highly recommend you contact my wife YOKO at 098-982-5610 to confirm remaining open dates and seat availability for Santa’s visit. Other than those special days indicted above, walk-ins are the rule of thumb.”

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”… and we aren’t kidding!  There actually is a restaurant here on-island which goes all out for Christmas, and serves up some good tidings as well.  Dreaming Angel, referred to as the Happy Dream restaurant in the original post, is a unique place to visit.  Since it is only open for the Christmas season you need to hop in your sleigh and head right over there before New Year’s Eve sneaks up on you.  This Christmas wonderland is well worth the drive for any Christmas enthusiast.

Our gracious hostess and the owner, Yoko, opened her Winter Wonderland 6 years ago after being encouraged by curious neighbors to share her home with the public.  Yoko has always gone all out when it came to decorating so all she had to do was put out an open sign and serve up dinner to her eager guests.

She even won a light competition when she entered to compete for a first place prize of $1,500. hosted by the Okinawa Electric company.  She was very excited to learn that she took first and once you see her place you will understand.  Her restaurant has been featured in the local paper, magazines and books as well.

Though Dreaming Angel does not offer an English menu Yoko is more than happy to read the menu to you.  It’s a little like visiting your favorite Aunt’s house and Santa’s workshop all at the same time.

We enjoyed several of the meal options that came as a set.  The sets ranged from Y1,250 – Y1,450 and included a salad, bread and your choice of drink.  Yoko also serves dessert – Y500 when you order a dinner set.

Vegetable pasta – this isn’t on the menu but, if you are a vegetarian Yoko is happy to accommodate you.

In addition to enjoying a meal in a very festive environment you can pick up some great decorating tips to incorporate your favorite Asian pieces with your traditional American Christmas decor.

One last note – for those of you who are Santa enthusiasts make sure you check out Yoko’s creation because she may not re-open her restaurant next year.

Merry Eating!

Dreaming Angel (Christmas) Restaurant

Payment:  This restaurant only takes Yen.

Phone: 098-982-5610 – Yoko shared that they have reserved Mondays and Tuesdays, for the rest of the season, for special seating with Santa.  Since Yoko speaks great English, calling and making reservations for any of the other 5 days of the week is easy.  Reservations are recommended as this bright little spot on a hill is small.

Hours:  Open Monday-Sunday from 4p.m. until 10 p.m.  Only open 6 weeks out of the year.

Google Maps Coordinates: 26.4371783, 127.83317490000002

Directions:  Travel on 75 North towards 329.  At the T for 75 and 329 make a right going towards Ishikawa Circle.  At the Ishikawa Circle make a right onto 329 going towards Camp Hansen.  Follow 329 for a short distance and look for the Carenex Gas Station.  You will make a left onto the street/alleyway right before the Carenex.  Follow this small road to the top and make a left – you will only be able to make a left here.  Dreaming Angel will be on your right – at night, you can’t miss it.  There are several areas to park so look for the parking signs.  If you are taking the expressway take exit 6 and make a left off of the expressway.  Then at the Ishikawa Circle make another left – you will now be on 329 heading towards Camp Hansen.  Follow the above directions from there.

  1. We just moved here and I would really like to come here for my birthday dinner. I tried calling to get a reservation for the 11th, but the person who answered said they didn’t speak English. 🙁 Is there a way to set a reservation online? Thanks for any help!

    • Alicia – Sorry, we do not have another way to contact us other than the number listed. Our helpers do speak a little English and should have got my wife Yoko to help you. Unfortunately however Dec 11 is one of the days Santa agreed to appear for the children and is by reservation only. According to Santa here is the rest of his schedule … Santa agreed to stop by 7-times this year; December 10, 11, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, which are by RESERVATIONS ONLY. As of this update, the 21st and 22nd of December are sold out. I highly recommend you contact my wife YOKO at 098-982-5610 to confirm any remaining open dates and seat availability for Santa’s visit. Other than those special days indicted above, walk-ins are the rule of thumb. We are open from 4:00 to 10:00 PM (last call) through 29 December, our last day. Enjoy and Happy Holiday to everyone.

  2. Yes we’re open again this year through 28 December. The only reserved days – for the guy in the “Red Suit” are 12, 13, 14, and 19, 20, 21. We’re open from 4:00 to10:00 p.m. daily.

    Merry Christmas to all

  3. The Dreaming Angel Coffee House (also known as the Christmas House) in Urumashi-Ishikawa is open for business. There is no other home on Okinawa like this one and you must see it to believe it. The proprietors have been opening their home and doing this Christmas event for almost 30-years. It’s spectacular. !

I stopped by on Tuesday, 29 November, for a sneak-preview of the house, its interior/exterior decorations and to get an update on when Santa would arrive. The house is open to the public beginning 1 December thru 28 December from 4:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily and serves an array of different dishes at moderate prices.

As for Santa’s schedule, he’ll be there 6-times this year starting 7/8 December, 14/15 December, and 21/22 December from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. – but on these days and times, it is by reservation only. David and Yoko (the proprietors) have tickets on sale right now that include the full meal with beverage, a small gift of candy for the children, and of course a jolly visit with Santa giving out presents. Parents are encouraged to bring their presents to the house ASAP so David can prepare them and so Santa can ensure delivery on the day you arrive for dinner with your children.

For more information, please call 098-982-5610 and ask for Yoko who also speaks English.

  4. Yes, my mother will be opening the house again this year. My mother speaks very good English and the published number is correct. There is a local television crew set to come out on the 8th, so it’s gonna get crowded quick after it airs. You should try to make reservations now. Hope this helps.

And to maybe help future questions, in the words of my mother, “I will be doing this until I die and then I want you to take over.” Don’t know about the latter, but she loves Christmas and people.

  5. Help! Is the phone # listed above the correct # for making reservations? I’ve called a couple times and the person who answers, while very friendly, only says “I do not speak english”…I would love to check out this amazing establishment.

    Thanks!!

  6. Thought I’d stop by to let everyone know that my mom WILL BE opening the restaurant this year. The doors will open to the public December 1, 2010. We look forward to everyone visiting again. See you then.

  7. I am so bummed, I just called to see about getting in tonight but they have a special event going on. Not sure if I will be able to make it before they close down…I really hope we do, I think my daughter will love it!

  8. Michael,
Don’t worry, your Mom had nothing but great things to say about you! Merry Christmas to you and your family too (and that’s not a bad idea about you stepping into your parents’shoes, I’m sure you could pull it off)……

  9. Jannine-san-Mom’s are supposed to embarrass their kids by showing a bunch of old photos to random strangers. My mom does it to the extreme, so if you’ve learned too much I apologize. 🙂
Thanks for all the wonderful comments about my parents. I’m sure they will love reading about the joy they have brought to your holidays. I’ll talk to my father about the possibilities of continuing the tradition next year. (I may end up being on the ladder in the rain.) My mother wants the tradition to continue even after she is long gone, but those are some large shoes to fill. All I can say for now is enjoy it while it lasts and may your holidays be filled with joy, love, and cheer.
Larissa-san-Thank you, I’m going to my email now.

  10. Michael – thanks for the info on your family. Your family’s restaurant has been a great source of conversation on this island and it will be missed!!! Your mom and her staff were fabulous and very generous with their time. Contact me at toeatinokinawa@yahoo.com and I will be happy to share the photo of your mom with you!!

  11. Michael,
I’ve met both your parents now and have enjoyed long conversations with them both; they are truly wonderful people and although I understand your Dad’s reluctance to continue the yearly tradition, I would love to see them open again next year (for selfish reasons). By the way, I took my 6 year old daughter over there on Monday night to see the “certain red suited man,” and she had a fantastic evening! And by the way, I feel as if I know you already because your Mom hauled some old newspapers and magazines out of the closet and showed us pictures of you. We got the full run-down of you and your family, and met your little boys the other night, very cute 🙂

    Jannine

  12. Hi, that’s a great picture of my Mom. How can I go about getting a copy?
For the person who asked if they live there; yes, they do and have been doing similar open house events since at least 1992. I am posting this because everyone seems to have enjoyed their visit. My Mom loves bringing joy to people and it’s been her dream to be able to do so in her home (hence the name Dreaming Angel).
However, I thought I’d inform those who’d like to experience Christmas at Dreaming Angel that the rumor in the house is this will be the final year. My parents (especially my father) are getting a tad too old for climbing 12 ft ladders, with electric lights wrapped around one arm, trying to hammer nails into concrete with the other, while carrying the spare lights between their lips, in the rain. So, if you plan on going don’t wait to see next year.
The store is open from 1600-2200 Monday-Sundays. However, beginning today (December 7) Mondays and Tuesdays are by reservation only because a certain red suited man will be coming by. The closing date is Sunday, December 27.
Thank you all for your positive comments about and I hoped my Mom was able to bring some holiday cheer to your lives.

  13. Goodness, it’s like going to Santa’s house for dinner, from the look of the food Mrs Santa is a good cook. The vegtable pasta looked real good, as did the bacon and cream sauce. What a novel idea for bring people together for Christmas, and her house (does she really live there?) Wow.
    Mom

  14. You can take 329 all the way there.
When the road forks at the two 329’s (I guess that is the Ishikawa rotary) Stay to the left.
Coming from Foster the traffic was insane so I took the Expressway, when you exit don’t freak at all the turning options. Just stay left. That will put you back on 329. (-: It is all lefts off the expressway.

  15. A group of ladies and I went just last night! It is a fun and festive place that really gets you in the mood for the holidays. Yoko is wonderful, taking the time to chat with our group and share her many talents.
