Editor’s Note: Thanks to Tamara for leaving the following information in our comments. Sachi’s was closed down but appears to have reopened.  Here’s what Tamara told us:

“Sachi has moved her antiques from her Nago store to her new location in Urasoe. She is located near Camp Kinser off of 58 (updated directions at the bottom of the post). The store is no longer large enough to carry all of the antiques that Sachi had up in Nago but you will find an amazing selection of obi and kimonos and a wonderful selection of accessories! Sachi often has special sales at the Marine Gift Shop and RyBo in Naha. So it is best if you call prior planning your shopping trip to make sure the store is open. 090-5473-5557 You can also call the same number to make reservations to make shisa dogs. The making of the shisa is still located up in Nago. Make a day of it and plan to have lunch at Pizza in the Sky while you are up there!”

Do you like to venture away from your base?  Is looking for something unique fun for you?  Then this gem of a shop, that sits up on a hill in Nago, is your kind of place.

Since this is my second tour here with my Marine, I have had the pleasure of watching this shop grow into a Japanese treasure that Americans love to visit.  What’s fun about Sachi’s is you never know what you’ll find – a new pottery piece that costs less than $20; a beautiful kimono for $100; a new pack of puppies running around the yard and possibly a new building.

Several of the buildings on the property didn’t even exist 8 years ago but they are a welcomed addition. There are at least 6 different buildings on the property and you are able to look into and shop from most of them.

There is even a small basement type area near the main building where you can find some bargains.  Their property is a great place to wander around, play with the puppies, find fun stuff to buy and take great photos!

My understanding is that all of Sachi’s pieces, kimonos, obis, etc. come from mainland Japan and new additions are arriving often.  Sachi even leaves her little haven in the sky to bring her wares directly to us at Island Treasures – the Marine Gift Shop on Foster.  Though it’s not as adventurous to drive to Foster, it is more convenient and the proceeds of the sales of all of our gift shops go to local charities.

One of the newest additions to this favored shopping spot is the ability to make your own shisa.  You pay Y3,000 per person for a 2 hr. session or, if you have a group of 4 or more you only pay Y2,500 per person.  You do need to call ahead to make reservations.

Not only is this a great place to find something no one else has, it’s also a really fun place to go with girlfriends on a day out.  I have also taken visiting relatives and it’s always a hit.  It use to be our tradition to drive to Sachi’s and then have lunch or dinner at Pizza In The Sky – also a hit with visitors from the states.  Nago has a lot to explore so bring your camera, lots of yen and your appetite for shopping!

Directions to Urasoe Shop:  Coming from Kadena: Head South on 58 towards Camp Kinser. Once you get to the first Kinser gate (it will be on your right) keep driving for another 5 minutes. You will pass a pachinko parlor on your left. The sign for the pachinko parlor is a large person in a rainbow colored attire. You are now going to look for a large 3 story building with a big empty parking lot next to it. This too is on your left. The sign on the building is green and yellow and will say Cafe . (** as of 9-1-2013 the building is wrapped in scaffolding and green tarps) STOP at that set of lights! You will be turning left there. The Street name is North Miyagi. It is VERY narrow. You will come to a stop. Turn left. You cannot turn right as there is a building there straight is a one way street. Drive about 100 meters and you will be making a right at the UCC red vending machine. Sachi’s store will be the 3 story white building. There will be many handmade shisa and frog statues out in front. Her store is on the 2nd floor. Parking can be tricky but as we all know parking anywhere in Okinawa can be! If you feel like you need help with directions please call the number listed below.

To get to the Nago location to make shisa:

Take the expressway North towards Nago until it ends – exit 10.  Follow 58 until you reach 84 and make a left.  You will pass the Pineapple Park and keeping driving for at least 10 minutes.  Make a right onto route 115 and follow as it winds up the hill.  You will eventually see a small sign for Sachi’s – follow until you have arrived at the bottom of their property.  Their driveway is awkward and slightly sttep but very doable.  Take the driveway to the top and park in the dirt parking area.  Allow yourself at least an hour from exit 5.

      • There is an update to the driving directions which may make Sachi’s a bit easier to find. There is a new 4 story building that has been built at the end of Miyagi North. This building will be easy to spot regardless of what direction you are coming from as there is a Burget King out front. If you are driving South you will stay in left lane to make left turn. If driving North from Naha you will stay in right lane then merge into turn lane at light making right turn. Another note is the Panchinko palor on the left heading South no longer has a giant rainbow sign. It is now red and white . When you see this sign know you are about 500 meters from your turn.

  1. Just got here and everything is closed up. My husband spoke to Sachi and
according to Sachi she is selling somewhere in Nago, he did not catch the name. There are no plans to reopen the site. Maybe someone out there knows where?

  2. I visited today. I saw than there have not been any posts for over a year so I just wanted to confirm that things are still as described above.

Sachi frequently visits Main Land Japan, so make sure you call whether it is for Shisa making or to see the Kimonos and other antiques to ensure she will be in town and the shop will be open on the day you intend to go (090-5473-5557 from above is current).

She was very patient, kind, and helpful in answering all of my questions and even teaching me how to properly wear a Kimono. The prices of all the items (Furniture, Kimonos, Garden Decorations, Tableware) were unbelievable compared to the local MCX/BX/PXs!

She also will sew an Obi into a wall hanging for you for an additional price and it takes a day or so before it will be ready for pickup. This is also much much more affordable than the ones at the Foster Exchange.

highly recommend the day trip if you have the time and are in the mood for a small adventure.

  3. Just went there today & they were closed! Not sure why. It was Tues afternoon at 1pm. We looked all over for some sign of hours but didn’t see anything. Called the number but no one answered. Either way, it was totally great to walk around & just see the grounds. We will definately be back this week & IMO the directions were actually pretty good as far as Oki directions go. 😉

  4. Hi Okinawa
    Hi Sachi!
I really miss her and Kuba-san (owner of Pizza in Sky)!I left Okinawa in 2007.
Everyone PCSing to Okinawa must stop and visit the best antique shop in the orient!
I met Sachi just when her shop was just getting started (1996-97)! It had only 2 small buildings. Over the years, I loved watching her business grow and American friendships flourish. She is truley the real thing and her demeanor is genuine.
Her shop carries everything you would want from Japan. If she doesn’t have it on hand, she will find it for you! Anything from Japanese hair ornments to getas, from household treasures to garden delights “Sachi has it”! My Utah home is a beautiful miniature version of Sachi’s!

NOTE: After shopping, please stop at Pizza in the Sky! Enjoy corn pizza and salada while looking out over the East China Sea. Tell my dear friends Sachi and Kuba-san
    Kim Newberry sent you!

  5. You can definitely play an “I Spy” game here. Lotsa knicks and knacks. I did pick up a plate and she said it was 120 years old also, but I remember reading about Holly’s being a 120 year old plate, too. Hmmm… Anyway, there are a bunch of puppies there now and her husband built Pizza in the Sky– just more tidbits. 🙂

  6. Forgot. She also wanted me to mention that they take more than Yen. They take credit card and American money.

My beautiful blue and white imari plate (120 yrs old) that was 2800 yen ended up being 1000 yen on sale. Love it!

  7. Was just at Sachi’s yesterday. Yes, the phone number is 090-5473-5557. As far as directions go, I would have liked bit more detail. Once past the Pineapple Park about 10-20 min. you are entering Motobu area. Pass the 123 first and then comes the 115. Kids had a blast with the puppies. It was like a seek and find; 2 puppies over there, three over there.

  8. I’m with Kristin – I would be shocked that they would move from their original location. I’ll look forward to confirming that she did or didn’t move. The Marine Gift Shop use to carry her “stuff” at the store so next time you go to Island Treasures ask one of the managers if they heard that she was moving. I do know that she sells kimonos and obis at a big event in Naha at least once a year so maybe they meant that she was gone for that particular weekend or week. I am going up there sometime in the next month so I’ll let you know if I find anything out then.

  9. We were just there a month ago – I would be surprised if it has moved as her location/architecture/decor is extremely unique (and also her home). Is there anybody who has been there before that can confirm it is still there as of now?

  10. Sachi also takes credit card. 🙂

Some friends and I made Shisas last year and had an absolute blast. You are able to choose from red, yellow or white clay (though some of the colors wanted were lost in translation, but we were happy with any color given). Mr Sachi is the one that will help you make your shisa. Shisa making groups can accomodate 6 people. It was one of the most fun girls day activities that I did on the island! Highly recomend this!
