I love shoes. Who’s with me? Before coming to Japan, I agonized over the shoe situation that would await me; I’d be in a county filled with the most adorable footwear, none of which would ever adorn my (average-sized, thank-you very much!) feet. Luckily, upon arriving, my obsessive worrying manifested itself into a passionate mission to find a store that could satisfy my shoe-cravings.

Located near Main Place in Naha, Shoe Plaza is heaven-on-earth for shoe-aholics and a savior for those of us in need of normal-sized footwear at a reasonable price. Shoe Plaza has something for everyone: men, women, and kids, from athletic runners, to heels for a night-on-the-town to sandals for sandy Okinawan beaches.

Shoes

I have bought sneakers, boots, high heels, and slippers from this amazing store. And the best part about having larger-than-Japanese-feet … often shoes in my size are on sale!  However, even with no price reduction, these shoes are affordable. The only way you’ll break the bank is if you follow in my footsteps and buy 4-5 pairs of shoes with every visit!

Shoe Plaza tends to organize their shoes from Small to X-Large. Check out the sizes on the bottom of the shoe, compare with this chart, and try them on! Hope is not lost if you have size 10 or up; I would still recommend checking it out and trying on different shoes, as shoe sizing can always be a little inconsistent. Good luck in your Japanese shoe adventures!

  1. Well, these sizes are approximate numbers, this chart was given to me by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) in a publication they give out to English teachers. Like I said, sizing can definitely be tricky and I recommend going into a shoe store and trying on shoes around your size number to find what works best for you!

  2. I think your size scale might be a bit off? I’m a woman who wears size 7 1/2 in the US, but I always wear a 24/24.5 in Japan. I think it’s 6 – 23, 6 1/2 – 23.5, 7 – 24, 7 1/2 – 24.5, 8 – 25, 8 1/2 – 25.5, 9 – 26.

  3. Yeah, think the sizes are a little off, but no biggie – you’d for sure want to try them on anyway. Frustratingly, I sometimes wear an L, sometimes an LL, and ocassionally the LL is too small. Grr. Anyway, Shoe Plaza is a chain and I’ve seen several locations around. I know there is one between the big 100Y store and Uniqlo on the 58 Bypass by Foster. Can’t remember off-hand where I’ve seen others, but there are more. I’ve tried on the black heels in the pic and not even the LL fit and there wasn’t anything larger in that style. Did see some awesome red heels in there though, but once again, not currently available in my bigfoot size. 🙁
And just for trivia’s sake, anything larger than an LL is called “Model Size” (sometimes queen size, but thats not as fun) and sizes smaller than an S are “Cinderella Size” – or at least so the sign in the back of the store said. 🙂
