Optimal Health Chiropractic. CONTRIBUTED BY SARAH MACCHIUSI
After continued failed attempts at base medical (including Physical Therapy at the Naval Hospital), I explored off base options for my ongoing chronic back pain. This is when I stumbled upon Dr. Kathleen Burke of Optimal Health Chiropractic, located in her home on base by Camp Courtney. Kathleen is a licensed chiropractor who is also certified in ART (Active Release Technique), DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization), amongst a handful of other things. Basically, she knows the ins and outs of the human body to a fine detail. Now just to be clear, Kathleen is a chiropractor. So she does “pop and crack”, which for some people is a huge release.
Using her online appointment system linked through her business Facebook page, it was apparent that Kathleen was already very popular and was booked out for at least the next week. Grasping for any kind of help, I decided to contact Kathleen personally, explaining my current situation and frustration. She was quick to squeeze me in during her spare time (within the next couple days). The following weeks were intensive but well worth every second.
When you enter the apartment, you’re greeted with a smile from Kathleen followed by breathtaking views of the ocean that are hard to forget. She made me feel completely at home, showed me around, offered me bottled water and had a selection of health/medical magazines to read while I waited (that’s if you can manage to tear yourself away from the view). Seriously, it’s incredible.
She sat me down, and once again, I explained my symptoms and history. Following this, Kathleen did a few quick checks, maneuvering my body, and then began treatment.
Kathleen quickly discovered that I was misdiagnosed and I actually had a slipped disc in my lower back. I went to see her almost every day for at least a couple weeks after this discovery. It was tedious, but I don’t know what I would’ve done without her. Again, I was seeing her after hours in her spare time after she had seen all her other patients.
My husband has also been seeing Kathleen for migraines and back issues, and he too agrees that she is one very clever lady! She is quick to help you understand what is going on with your body, using books, videos, and her 3D spine model, putting it into simple “non-medical” terms.
Kathleen, without a doubt, is passionate about her work and takes great pleasure in helping people. She is an asset to the island and I cannot recommend her highly enough.
